A full-house removal is a larger and more staged undertaking than removing a single fence or roof, and it comes up in two situations: a comprehensive renovation, or clearing a property before demolition.
What gets found
In a typical post-war Geelong home, asbestos is rarely confined to one place. External cladding and eaves lining are the obvious elements. Inside, wet-area wall and floor sheeting in bathrooms, laundries and kitchens is very common. Vinyl floor tiles and the black bituminous adhesive under them are frequently overlooked, as is the backing on old sheet vinyl.
Then the less obvious items: electrical meter board backing panels, sheeting behind wood heaters and stoves, textured ceiling coatings from the relevant era, pipe lagging in subfloors, and packing washers behind sheets and under fixings.

How the work is staged
Removal is sequenced so that occupied or retained areas stay isolated from work areas. Work zones are established with appropriate controls, the material is removed while keeping it intact, and it is wrapped, sealed and removed from site progressively rather than accumulating.
Where friable material is present, that is a different class of work with more stringent controls, including enclosures and negative pressure, and it is handled separately from bonded material. Clearance
On completion, the area is cleaned and inspected, and where required an independent clearance certificate is issued confirming the area is safe to reoccupy or for other trades to enter. That certificate is what allows a builder to proceed, so its timing matters to a renovation program.

Do we have to move out during a full-house removal?
It depends on the scope and where the material is. Localised work can often be done with the rest of the house isolated and occupied. Extensive removal, and any friable work, generally means vacating for the duration and until clearance is issued. That gets established at assessment rather than on the day.
How long does a full-house removal take?
It depends entirely on how much material is present and whether any of it is friable. A staged residential removal is commonly measured in days rather than weeks, but an accurate answer requires an assessment, since the scope varies enormously between houses of the same age.
What is a clearance certificate and do I need one?
It is an independent confirmation, following inspection, that a work area is safe to reoccupy. It is required in defined circumstances and is generally recommended in others, and builders and other trades will usually want to see it before entering the area.
